Andrew White

Andrew White originally from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, moved to New Zealand when he was 16 and quickly established himself as one of NZ's top guitarists and singer-songwriters. He released his first album, Conversations, in 1984 and was immediately signed by the US label Narada Records. So far, he has recorded nine, including Islands, a collaboration with 1995 Grammy-nominated artist David Arkenstone. Following a live broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland, he was snapped up by Linn Records and recorded Guitarra Celtica, a stunning instrumental album featuring 16 hauntingly beautiful original tracks. His latest recording and Andrew's first vocal album, Pray For Rain, features such artists as Karen Matheson (Cappercaille), Michael McGoldrick (Afro Celt Sound System), and Brendan Power (Sting, Ray Charles). Released on the independent Scottish label Vertical Records and produced by Capercaillie founder Donald Shaw, it is a skilful recording with a unique mix of styles, strengthened by Andrew's brilliant guitar playing and soulful vocals. Worldwide, over 1-million copies have been sold of albums including Andrew's own compositions.

Andrew White has toured internationally as a soloist and supporting superstars such as Irish folk rock group Clannad, The Corrs, Michelle Shocked, The Indigo Girls, Taj Mahal and many more. He also toured with Scots folk/MOR outfit Capercaillie and took a 50,000-strong German festival audience by storm in a pairing with Brendan Power, the harmonica sensation from the Riverdance Orchestra.

Andrew's unique sound is difficult to describe. He was inspired in his youth by folk guitar greats Ralph McTell, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn but is of a generation even more mind-blowing in its dexterity and inventiveness on the fretboard. While technically brilliant, his guitar work is not just out to impress - it has a pleasing, highly melodic structure. In acoustic circles in Scotland, where he lived until recently, those who have been lucky enough to see him rate him on a par with Tony McManus, but in a different genre.

After sold-out tours of Ireland and New Zealand with Australia's guitar-magician Tommy Emanuel, and successful solo tour of New Zealand with Cape Breton Fiddle virtuoso Gillian Boucher, Andrew is currently living in Canada with his family.

Andrew White - Live was released in early 2005 and was recorded by CBC Radio Canada for the Atlantic Airwaves program. Andrew has been taking Canadian audiences by storm including a fantastic headlining performance at The Canadian Finger-style Guitar Festival in Odessa, Ontario, and is currently working on a highly anticipated new vocal album.

Saturday July 28
The Olympic Symphonium with special guest Tim Walker of Grand Theft Bus
Saint John City Market - 11:00 am
The Olympic Symponium with Special Guest Tim Walker

The Olympic Symphonium is a unique collaboration among 3 accomplished Maritime musicians. With the hopes of forming a quiet escape from their accustomed high energy rock projects, The Olympic Symphonium is Graeme Walker, Nick Cobham, and Kyle Cunjak. Acoustic guitars, an upright bass and a toy keyboard are the tools used by this group. This choice of instrumentation allows the music to convey a real sense of honest emotion with a tongue-in-cheek humor sensibility. The idea of The Olympic Symphonium was to focus more on the subtle, gentler side of music. The concept of creating a softer more intimate group of songs is not only exciting to the group, but will be a welcome change to the dedicated listeners of these musicians.

Graeme Walker: Maritime music promoter, booking agent and member of Grand Theft Bus, Graeme has made his living over the last few years writing, playing and promoting original music. Graeme has toured North America several times over the last four years with GTB and has built a solid, loyal following in both the US and Canada with this group. GTB has released 2 albums to date through Maple Music and has earned great accolades from fans and media alike. Graeme was also a member of Halifax based folk rock group Wooderson who also released one independent album in 1999.

Nick Cobham: English major and founding member of the recently defunct Sound Explosion Award winning Fat Jebus, Nick has immersed himself in the New Brunswick music community. Along with The Olympic Symphonium, Nick’s current focus is Fredericton based All of Green. This group is in the studio working on their first full length recording. Nick can also be found lending his bass, guitar, and vocal talents to various recordings around the province and also performing intimate solo shows.

Kyle Cunjak: Freelance photographer and contributor to many Fredericton based music groups, Kyle is a seasoned veteran in styles as diverse as the prog/funk elements of Melonworks and the beatnik country stomp of local folk hero Petunia. Kyle is a first class bass player in the province and his dedication to his craft is unmatched. Kyle is equally versatile on upright bass and fretted and fretless electric basses and his knowledge and melodic prowess of his instrument is truly incredible for a player of his age. Kyle will undoubtedly have a long, creative career in the music industry.
